Winter Windshield Tips
Posted in Windshield Repair, on January 20, 2020
Winter season in Toronto comes with heavy rain, snow, icy winds, and even sub-zero temperatures, all of which can wreak havoc on your car’s windshield. According to the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), cracks or chips on a car’s windshield are up to 80 percent more likely to grow or spread in cold/freezing temperatures. Therefore, if you fail to take extra care of your windshield in this season or if you fail to schedule windshield repair when necessary, you could easily find yourself stuck on the side of the road with a cracked windshield. We at MRM AutoGlass can help with this. Here are a few tips that can help to preserve your windshield through the winter.
1. Schedule Windshield Inspection
For it to be able to hold up to all the abuse that the Toronto winter season brings, your windshield needs to be in optimum condition. Therefore, the first thing that you need to do is get your car’s windshield inspected by a certified auto glass repair specialist like the ones who we have at MRM Autoglass. Our specialists can identify tiny cracks/chips or points of weakness on your windshield that you may have missed. Water or moisture can easily seep into such cracks/chips on your windshield and then freeze when the temperatures plummet. Water expands when it turns to ice, so it can cause those cracks/chips to grow and spread significantly. Our auto glass repair specialists can repair such cracks/chips for you. Our windshield repair services are performed professionally and meticulously, using industry-recommendation windshield repair techniques and adhesives.
2. Get an Ice Scraper and/or Winter Windshield Washer Fluid
In this season, layers of ice and snow are likely to build up on your car’s windshield overnight or as you go about your daily errands. One of the recommended ways in which you can remove this ice is with the help of an ice-scraper. This method is effective, but it can be tedious because it has to be done by hand. You can also use winter windshield washer (de-icer) fluid to remove caked ice on your car’s windshield. Most de-icer fluid products do a great job of dissolving ice quickly, so they are worth the investment.
3. Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes
When you are in a hurry or when you are late for an appointment, you may be tempted to pour hot water over your windshield or set the heat level of your car’s windshield defroster to maximum; don’t do it. Your windshield’s glass expands or contracts with changes in temperature, so when it is opposed to sudden extreme temperature changes, it can even crack or shatter in some situations. It would be best if you warmed up your windshield gradually by setting a low defroster heat level over a long period.
