Taking Care of Your Windshield This Summer
Posted in Windshield Repair, on July 09, 2020
With the ongoing pandemic, this summer we will all be spending a bit more time close to home. That means more road trips, camp weekends, cottage visits, and scenic drives. With all that driving, it is important to make sure your vehicle is safe and ready for long trips in the sun. When it comes to taking care of your car, windshield chip repair is only the beginning. Don’t risk ruining or damaging your windshield this summer. Here are some helpful tips to take care of your car and prevent windshield repairs.
Repair Any Damage
Although windshield repair might seem like an obvious way to take care of your car this summer, many drivers do not realize that even small chips need to be swiftly mended. Small chips or cracks can quickly expand and compromise the integrity of your windshield. In fact, a small chip can result in your windshield being unable to protect you properly in the event of a minor or major collision. If you can see a visible chip, small or large, it is likely time to get your windshield fixed or replaced.
Park in the Shade
Parking your car in the hot sun over the summer cannot only make existing cracks and chips worse, but it can cause them, too! We recommend parking in the shade whenever possible to help keep your windshield (and car) protected from the worst of the summer sun.
When it comes to temperature, unexpected fluctuations can also affect your windshield. When you enter your hot car after a long day, your first instinct is to blast the AC. However, forcing cold air onto a hot windshield can also cause unexpected cracks and breaks. We recommend beginning your drive with the windows down to help gently cool the car, then turning on the AC. This will help protect your windshield while still allowing you to cool down while you drive.
Handle Doors with Care
Small chips or cracks can also be exaggerated by frequent slamming of car doors. When you slam your car door, it causes a rapid pressure change that can cause existing cracks to expand. In fact, you may not even notice a crack until it has expanded due to a slammed door! Always do your best to close your doors with firm caution to ensure your windshield remains intact to protect your safety.
